A man was airlifted to hospital after his car overturned on the A529 Audlem to Market Drayton road yesterday.

Police sealed off the Green Lane road out of Audlem to traffic soon after the accident was reported at 3.14pm.

West Mercia ambulances attended the scene, near Coxbank, and today said the man, believed to be in his early 60s, had been trapped in the overturned vehicle for about 45 minutes.

Fire crews from Market Drayton and a Rescue Tender from Wellington arrived at the scene and cut the driver free using holmatro cutting equipment and airbags.

Audlem fire fighters were also on scene quickly along with a rapid response paramedic and were instrumental in releasing the casualty.

The Market Drayton fire appliance officer took charge of the incident on arrival as the accident scene was in Shropshire.

Paramedics treated the victim for head injuries and he was eventually airlifted to University Hospital North Staffs.

Police have not named the man but said today that the driver suffered only minor cuts and bruises.
