Many local residents, as well as visitors, will have noticed that renovation work is now progressing well at Audlem Mill, in readiness for the planned reopening by Easter. So far, this has all been internal work to the ground floor and first floor areas, but work will start quite shortly on the exterior, with scaffolding appearing for work to be done to the roof, windows and external walls.

Meanwhile, Peter and Christine Silvester have been contacting suppliers to order stock and fittings, and they have recently got back from the International Spring Fair at the NEC, where they have ordered many rather different products. They are aiming these at everyone, not just canal devotees.

The ground floor will, as before, have canal gifts, maps, books, and related goods, set amongst the hoppers and chutes of the mill building. There will also be canal art, from both established and lesser known waterway artists.

The first floor will be very different from how it was. It will be largely dedicated to a variety of needlework and related crafts, with a small selection of fabrics for the various crafts, specialist tools, the full range of DMC embroidery threads, and many other needlework and haberdashery items. The Mill will stock the full Abacus Designs range of over 200 cross stitch kits, all designed by Christine, of which about half are of canal and waterway subjects, and also canal related kits from other designers, including canal maps.

There will also be regular one-day courses on a range of needlework and canal related craft subjects.
