Wildfire

Regulars at the Methodist musicals know now what to expect. After twenty-five years they are used to good music, enthusiastic singing, well-prepared children and lots of colour and movement. This year they won't have been disappointed. 'Wildfire' was an excellently produced feast of colour and song.

The story line was taken from the New Testament. Stephen, one of the early Christian believers, fell foul of the Jewish authorities. He was stoned to death, thereby becoming the first Christian martyr. A member of the mob that stoned Stephen was a certain Saul of Tarsus. One can only speculate as to what effect the stoning had on Saul. Some time later he was converted from a persecutor of Christians to one of their fiercest advocates. As Paul, he became one of the leading figures of the early church and took the gospel far and wide.

An all-age cast of about fifty performed 'Wildfire', supported by a number of others behind the scenes. The children and young people did the acting and dancing, the music was provided by a talented band of musicians assembled for the occasion, a sizeable group of soloists led the singing, with solid support from a most colourfully costumed chorus. The whole production was held together by the producer, John Crompton, who led the production team superbly.

There aren't many activities that are genuinely all-age. This production always has been. From the youngest to the oldest, all know that the success of the musical depends on them and that therefore only their best will do. They've given their best again this year and deserve to be congratulated.
