Members of Audlem WI were transported to the Victorian era at their February meeting by guest speaker Mr A Hughes who gave a talk on Victorian Staffordshire figures, illustrated by colour slides.

His talk went back to the 1800s when Britain's manufacturing dominated world trade and the Potteries led the world in their sphere. Gilded and colourful figures of Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert were very popular as were figures of their children and their spouses. Circuses were very popular subjects too and many circus acts were created in pottery including lion-tamers and their lions. These now sell for thousands despite only costing pennies to manufacture.

The next meeting of Audlem WI is on 1st March with visitors and new members very welcome.
