Meeting with Justine Greening

Along with several other Conservative MPs, I met with Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Education to discuss fair school funding. This is an area that I am passionate about and I want to ensure that Eddisbury's schools foster academic excellence and give pupils the best possible chance in life. As I stated I would do some weeks back, I have been making representations as part of the Department of Education's consultation on school funding.

Question on the progress of the Small Modular Reactors competition

I spoke during questions to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) where I asked Nick Hurd, Minister of State for Climate Change and Industry whether he could provide an update on the small modular reactor (SMR) design competition, part of a Government initiative to to find ways for UK to be a global leader in innovative nuclear technologies. The minister congratulated me on my recent election to the BEIS select committee, spoke about the importance of the nuclear industry to the UK's energy mix and stated that the department will be announcing further developments shortly.

Meeting Tarporley's farmers

I enjoyed a highly constructive NFU North West meeting with a group of Tarporley farmers. We discussed a range of issues including bovine tuberculosis, the use of certain herbicides and the effects of Brexit on local farmers and upon the local economy. As a farmer myself I am very keen to ensure the continued prosperity of Eddisbury's farming community and I was very interested to hear the variety of perspectives on the issues facing Cheshire's farmers today.

International Women's Day

I was delighted to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th. The day has been widely celebrated on March 8th for 100 years now and I believe that this international holiday is of profound importance. Concurrently, a historic landmark has been passed as the number of female MPs ever elected now surpasses the number of male MPs currently sitting in the House of Commons. To celebrate this auspicious moment a commemorative photo was taken in the members lobby of all the current female MPs, each with card indicating our respective numbers; I am the 381st ever elected female MP, out of a total of 456.

Interview with Sky News

I was interviewed by Sky News in Audlem where I discussed the importance of fair school funding and highlighted the discrepancies in funding between schools in Eddisbury and other parts of the country. I talked about the work I have been doing so far to encourage the Government to address these issues in our education system. I also discussed the Prime Minister's rebuttal of Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP's demand for a second referendum on Scottish Independence and I believe that the Prime Minister is completely correct in taking the stance she has done.

Brexit Bill and Article 50

As you will have heard, Royal Assent has been given to the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill that passed the through both Houses of Parliament on Monday. This will ultimately allow the Prime Minister to sign Article 50, beginning the process of the UK's exit from the EU. Due to my belief that Parliament should have a vote on the final deal made with the EU, I abstained during last Monday's vote on Amendment 2, although I have supported the triggering of Article 50 and have voted for it throughout the bill's progress.
