The Turtle Dove may not be a rarity but Audlem Online is told by an enthusiastic bird watcher that they are getting unusual, particularly the further north you go in England. Audlem is probably near to its north western limit. Seeing one by the A525 near the Weaver bridge immediately outside the village certainly stopped one twitcher in his tracks. The Turtle Dove is a summer visitor and they arrive quite late compared with most migrants. Most of the doves seen in the area are Collared Doves, now one of the most common birds in Britain yet unknown in this country before the mid 1950's.
An inevitable bird question for this time of year – has anyone heard or seen a cuckoo yet?
