Local MP Stephen O'Brien says that the number of children caught playing truancy in his Eddisbury constituency, which includes Audlem, leapt to 1,745 last year, compared to just 193 in 1997-98.

The almost 10 fold increase also show that 50% of Eddisbury pupils have played truant at some time over the year. The MP warned that the problem leads to lower standards of education and more petty crime, saying: "Despite £1 billion of taxpayers' money being spent on 'initiatives' to tackle truancy and behaviour, too many children still miss school." Mr O'Brien believes some parents need to take greater responsibility for getting their children to school particularly as missing school can be the start of a criminal lifestyle.
