As Audlem campaigners battle to stop large housing developments in the village, the nearby town of Whitchurch is demanding more new houses.

Whitchurch Town Council is reported 'dismayed' that Shropshire Council has reduced the town's housing allocation from 1,700 to 1,500 in its provisional Local Plan.

Councillors claim they haven't been consulted over the drop which is contained in the revised options to Shropshire's emerging Local Plan.

They say more new homes are needed to secure the town's future, to revive the local economy and to create jobs.

And they insist that 1,700 new homes was the figure agreed with Shropshire Council as a realistic target for the town.

A working group of councillors and planning officers is to be set up to look at the situation.

Acting town clerk Pete Cooper said: "The town council feels this is a one-off opportunity to get the town going. More houses mean we can justify having more employment land."
