Toilets attract praise

Since Audlem's refurbished public toilets re-opened on Wednesday morning, visitors and residents alike seem impressed with the new facilities.

From being a let-down and creating a poor first impression, the toilets are now a credit to the village. Previously, visitors arrived at the car park and found a dingy, tiny men's toilet beneath a garish 'Urinal' sign while women were faced with a fearsome, and unreliable, automated loo that could trap the unwary and flush them clean.

Now upgraded to 'Ladies' and 'Gentlemen', plus a Disabled toilet, the comments have been all positive. A lady hiker said she came to Audlem to walk as she had read about the car park and toilets on this website. Other visitors described them as the best they had seen in a long time.

Two Cabinet members from Cheshire East council were in Audlem this week and admired the toilet's interior design. They were told about the range of talent in the village and that local resident Pete Hollinshead had come forward and drawn up the designs having had professional experience working for Armitage Shanks.

The toilets have been rebuilt by local Audlem company Construction Management Services (CMS) led by Des Guerin while the exterior illustrations are by Audlem artist Jo Halden. Her designs, and other notices, were interpreted and installed on the building by The Sign Studio from Crewe. The cleaning contract is with Audlem Angels.

Local parish councillors Bill Consterdine and Mike Hill have overseen the project and have been checking out reactions by users to the toilets as well as ensuring all has been working perfectly this week.
