County and Borough councillors at the Joint Highways and Transportation meeting tonight in Crewe voted unanimously to welcome the de-priming of the A525 through Audlem. This followed confirmation at the meeting by Cheshire Highways officers that Shropshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and the Government Office West Midlands were all in full agreement and that the road would be removed from the Primary Route network by 31st March 2009.

Councillors and officers from the county's highways department were pressed several times by Audlem representatives to guarantee that the process would proceed as promised and those assurances were given publicly.

Residents who attended the meeting saw the culmination of a forty year battle to change the status of the road. The arrival of satnav systems has worsened the situation on the narrow road with long-distance trucks, many travelling from Continental Europe to Ireland or North Wales, regularly blocking the road, particularly in Stafford Street where it winds past the church wall.

The highways officer explained to residents that changing the satnav information does take time but that the new information is sent to the satnav systems by Ordnance Survey once the de-priming is formally signed off.

Reducing the number of HGVs passing through the village was the #1 issue in the Parish Plan published in 2005. Since then, there has been continuous work by the Parish Council and the Parish Plan group to de-prime the A525 as this was recommended as the vital first step in reducing the flood of long-distance trucks through Audlem.
