TITANIC: A TRAGEDY OF AVOIDABLE SCALE?

Ocean and river cruises rank high amongst the most popular holidays. Which begs the question: “Before embarking on such a cruise, would you check how many lifeboats the ship has? And how many passengers and crew they could carry?”

Is it something prospective passengers on the tragic RMS Titanic, asked themselves when they booked their tickets, back in in 1912?

It’s a topic which the retired business and professional people who make up Audlem Probus Club will be exploring this Thursday (May 22), during Andrew Rowe’s presentation: “Are You Sure There Are Enough Lifeboats?”.

Andrew describes the voyage on which the ill-fated passengers were booked, as being “. . .the maiden voyage of the century by what was then the world’s largest, movable man-made object”.

Without revealing too much detail about Andrew’s presentation content, suffice to say he has an intriguing method of making the backstory of what led up to such a huge loss of life truly personal for his audience. As well as a “tour” of Titanic, Andrew will raise questions about its overall safety, whether or not such a huge loss of life could have been prevented, and why third-class passengers were separated from others.

Guests and new members welcome:

Audlem Public Hall, from 10am, May 22nd.
