Steve Elliott at the Great North Run

He is extremely thankful to all those who have sponsored his chosen Breast Cancer charity – over £2,300 has been raised.

There cannot be many people these days who don't know of someone who has experienced this cancer. Life chances are continuing to improve, and charity donations have considerably assisted this and will probably continue to do so.

The Run

Inspired by Brendan Foster, the first GNR was held in June 1981, with 12,000 runners.

This year there were 60,000 entries!

When Steve (and this editor!) first ran in the late 1990s, there were about 15,000 runners. Timings were made between the starting pistol and the finish line – but it could easily take over 30 minutes to get to the start line, so manual adjustments by runners had to be made.

Microchips tied to shoe laces were introduced, which gave runners accurate start to finish times.

This year technology has improved to allow instant online access to run times and position (see photo).

A commendable effort for a now septuagenarian!
