Approaching thirty walkers joined in the first ever Smart-ARS local hike. Guided by cryptic clues in rhyme, they answered a series of testing questions en route yesterday.

Divided into teams, they headed off on a snow covered route in brilliant sunshine, a contrast to the lashing rain that caused the original event, scheduled between Christmas and New Year, to be postponed.

Armed with the poetic clues composed by Mike Mason, ably assisted by John Tilling, plus a map – which would bag extra points if left sealed and unopened – the teams completed the circuit in around two hours.

The final clue steered all back to

the Lord Combermere where, fortified with mulled wine and chips, the teams' efforts were marked. It was a close contest but there has to be a winning team who were presented with the Golden Boot award, a full 11 1/2 size, which will be treasured by the team, the organisers are sure, for a full year.

The event was declared a success by all the Audlem Ramblers Society (ARS) members and will be re-run on a different route at the end of 2013 as a break from the Festive season – weather permitting.

We hope to bring you the full set of clues so those that wish to can navigate themselves around the 4-mile circuit and test your observation and local knowledge. The answers will follow a few days later.
