Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

"The one where the History Society went to Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings"

Last Wednesday 19 members thoroughly enjoyed a sunny, summer outing to the museum which was bought by Historic England after being left derelict for nearly 20 years and restored together with Shropshire Council, some philanthropists and all of us who 'donate' to the Lottery.

The significance of the mill's construction being that it was the first iron-frame building in the world -- the true grandaddy of future skyscrapers.

The tour guides, staff and yummy treats from the cafe were all highly commended.

What is Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings?

Situated just outside Shrewsbury town centre, the internationally important Flaxmill Maltings site reflects a time when Shropshire led the way in engineering. The site is home to eight special buildings each with a unique story to tell, including the 1797 Main Mill which is the grandparent of skyscrapers.

This remarkable piece of the industrial revolution is being restored but the new exhibition, called The Mill, and Turned Wood Cafe are now open. Behind-the-Scenes tours are now available.

Visitors can come along and experience the amazing stories of this place and it's people by buying tickets to The Mill. Alternatively, there is no charge to simply wander the courtyards and take in the buildings in your own time and perhaps enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in the Cafe.
