Say 'cheese' for the camera

Local cheese company Joseph Heler Ltd has been in the TV spotlight as camera crews have visited their dairy at Hatherton for two programmes to be screened later this year.

TV cooks, Dave Myers and Simon King, better known as the The Hairy Bikers, filmed at the dairy as they toured Cheshire for a new summer show focusing on the sights and tastes of each British county. They arrived on-site on their trademark two-wheels and examined the cheese-making process from start to finish.

They took great interest in Heler's award-winning herd of cows and the way the animals are pampered. David Wells of Heler's says: "Pampering the cows is a practice that Joseph Heler Cheese has been adhering to for decades. They all have names, have their hooves manicured, are given mattresses to sleep on, music to listen to and the pastures of the lush Cheshire countryside on which to graze."

The second programme looking at the company is Jimmy's Farm. Star of the show, Jimmy Doherty, visited the dairy to learn more about the science behind cheese. He focussed on the role of bacteria in changing the milk – all sourced from Cheshire and the surrounding countryside.

The programme, part of a series that will look at the fascinating science behind a range of household products, will be screened on BBC1 in the autumn.

Star of The Hairy Bikers episode is likely to be Clarissa, the prize-winning heifer that's also featured on Heler's delivery vehicle. The company's White, Coloured and Blue Cheshire Cheese is made solely from the milk from Clarissa and her friends in the pedigree Holstein herd.
