There was much comment on AudlemOnline's Facebook page about yesterdays' story by Colin Ainley about the proposal to demolish the White Lion and build five houses on the site:

Joseph Bloor says: "I think there needs to be a conserted community effort to oppose this. The deadline for comments/ objections is 31st of August. As previous comments this is a significant local landmark and although the businesses located there have not survived there is no reason why the right offer would not be successful. Maybe a community owned/managed pub similar to Hind's Head in Norton in Hales?

"Converting to residential would be a least worst option. I have looked at the plans etc and having 4 driveways (two off Audlem road and two off long hill lane) will make a difficult junction much worse. There are also signs of bats (protected species) activity and possibly nesting in the roof space of the existing buildings. I would suggest calling a community (Audlem, Buerton and Hankelow) meeting to discuss this as soon as possible.

"I was involved in opposition to a large development in London that would have threatened a local woodland and nature reserve and know it takes a lot of work to get your voices heard. Planning committee meetings are open to the public and there should be local people allowed to make representations opposing this.

"On AudlemOnline it says there is a meeting scheduled for Monday 15th of August at 7.30pm in the Hankelow Chapel Comunity Room. I would encourage anyone interested to attend."

Audrey King says: "It would be so sad if it were to be knocked down, it's such a focal point of the village, which lost the garage and grocers shop/ post office. I used to live next door in the 50s and 60s. A suggestion I heard would be to change it to a B & B, which might be of interest to the golfers at Brookfield."

Rach / Steve Shore-Carter say: "I think it should stay it has bean there all of my life when I was a teenager that pub was full of people every wk end and busy in the week you just need the right landlord in it to bring village back together very sad if it goes to many people think of making money in stead of memories!"

Andy Hassall says: "In my opinion it should be converted, not demolished, the White Lion is the only landmark as such in Hankelow."

Sandra Davies says: "I was hoping it would of turned into the much missed post office a "farmers market " and coffee shop. It definitely should not be demolished!"

Alison Cooper says: "So sad as an ex resident of Audlem used to go regularly here. Even had an engagement do there in my 20s. It's very sad. Why don't they just convert it like they did with the Lamb."

Timothy Collier says: "Don't know it, but the time to end the loss of historic buildings is needed, to avoid mediocrity trends: at the best I hope it will reopen, and the worst scenario is conversion not demolition."

Andrew Carter says: "Out of interest if over 200 years old wouldn't it be classed as listed?"

Michelle Noble says: "Terrible. I'm really disappointed to hear this. Can we all get together and stop it?"

Kevin Brookshaw asks: "How much would it cost to buy it and run it has a country pub. Could be interested."

Sarah Bazley added that it was her first job there.

Michelle Noble says: "Terrible. I'm really disappointed to hear this. Can we all get together and stop it?"

Mike Denning says: "Is this not a listed building being that old?"

Charmaine Abdul Karim says: "Terrible shame another land mark going but hey-ho, sign of the times."
