Wake at 0515. To the very first chirps of the dawn chorus . Cereal in my bowl and to the tv. On and all looking good in Melbourne . Track temperature of 35c so a lovely day down there. A crowd of just under 500,000 attending the event.

A mixed race of safety car , but a good race . My cat happy to be fed early. Perez has battled from the pit lane at the start to position 9th after 23 laps. Good driving by a determined driver and in a fine car of course. But the race ended very strangely . Never see such before.

In the event, with a very strange F1 race, saw no match of the day and anyway Gary Lineker missing again.

TV. Worrying piece on Taiwan . On BBC and well worth a viewing on catch up tv.

The Taiwan Straits are 100 miles wide. That is all and some of Taiwan's island even nearer to mainland China. More and more military activity .

Population 24 million in the country .

Taipei one of most densely populated cities in the world and a young population. High tech in computer world . If it all blows up , there will be a very bad time for all of the world. So scary . So very scary

In 1975, I was in the Far East to see factories in Hong Kong . Taiwan , Philippines, Thailand etc. My company had sanctioned taking Joan, my wife with me this time as a thank you for some good year end figures . Joan was bowled over by the experience . Longest flight ever for her. Did a deal with the Peninsular Hotel and we had a very sumptuous mini state room.

When I first went to Taiwan in '70 there was much evidence that the county was an R&R place for US service men from the Vietnamese war. And before that the Korean War.
