A problem electricity outage.

As regular readers will know, and those affected by electricity outages will be even more aware, extensive work on the local electricity supply is now underway.

Despite, however, all the best preparations – and we understand these have not been helped by a Cheshire East council official attempting to change dates for road closures at a late stage in the process – the following example shows how much attention to detail is needed with such work.

A resident living to the west of the village on the Whitchurch Road reports major difficulties last Thursday. While informed quite properly about an impending electricity outage, the reconnection did not go smoothly.

After a day without electricity, sitting for much of the time in overcoats, the re-connection of electricity was eagerly awaited at the scheduled 4.30pm. Half an hour later the electricity was still off and a phone call was made to ScottishPower. Engineers would be round immediately to reset the main fuse and restore current, the resident was told.

But 35 minutes later nothing happened, the temperature had dropped considerably and it was pitch dark in the house. Lights had however been restored to all the neighbouring properties. The resident is, however, competent with electrical matters and re-inserted the main fuse – Audlem Online says probably not a recommended solution. Two minutes later the electricity failed again and the reason was soon clear: outside the house two engineers were re-disconnecting the fuse.

Hopefully this is a isolated incident on what seems to have been, so far, a well-planned operation. It does however show how important it is that all the details are right and, if your house is in darkness when neighbouring properties have been reconnected, do not hesitate to call ScottishPower – their number will be on the letter informing you of any likely outage while the re-cabling and installation of new poles is completed.

The resident involved in this incident has asked for his experience to be published to advise anyone who suffers similar problems to make that phone call.
