At the Parish Council meeting on Monday evening, two items of interest that did not involve planning (the subject of several separate articles in due course) were discussed.

Post Office

Denise Nutbrown of the Post Office organisation has informed the Parish Council that, since there appears to be no retail outlet in the village willing and able to host a Post Office counter, consideration is now being given to an Outreach service.

Under this arrangement, a full Post Office service (i.e., banking, currency etc as well as normal postal facilities) would be provided for three hours on two days each week.

Apparently they have a Post Master willing to offer such a travelling service to Audlem, subject to financial viability.

There will be a visit from Post Office people during February to investigate potential premises for such an Outreach service within the village.

The view expressed by Councillors was that this would be well short of an ideal solution, but that there appears to be very little choice between this and no Post Office service at all.

New Year Fireworks

The funding of the firework display at New Year was discussed.

In previous years the Parish Council has contributed about a third of the £1050 (before VAT) that the New Year fireworks cost to put on. The other two thirds has been shared by ADAS and ASET. In 2016 both groups withdrew from the arrangement at short notice leaving the Parish Council to bear the full cost.

After discussion Councillors decided that since attendance had dwindled in recent years and these fireworks did not bring any economic benefit to the village they could not justify the cost. It was agreed there would be no Parish Council funding for fireworks for New Year 2018. This decision would be reviewed alongside the rest of the budget in December 2017.
