Wintry weather did not deter a good-sized audience from attending the first Audlem District History Society meeting of 2013 on Thursday evening.

Everyone present was enthralled by the talk from Dinah Andrew (a Society member) on Lord Combermere – a country gentleman and his legacy. Dinah is passionate about her subject and gave us many interesting details about his later life.

Lord Combermere was a holder of the Gold Stick for 35 years – a largely ceremonial role that saw him travelling in the Coronation Procession of Queen Victoria and being a pallbearer at the funeral of the Duke of Wellington.

He became a Field Marshall at the age of 81!

His legacy is still very much in evidence – the stables that he built in 1837 at Combermere Abbey are now in use as prestigious bed and breakfast accommodation.

As Dinah remarked -" A Cheshire Hero".

Audlem Online adds: Our photographs, as well as the statue to Lord Comberemere, show the interior of one of the cottages at Combermere Abbey, the Combermere Arms at Burleydam, a portrait of Lord Combermere and the Lord Combermere pub in Audlem village centre.
