Planning for Minerals

Cheshire East Council is to consult residents and interested parties on how best to achieve a sustainable approach to mineral planning in the Borough.

The area is home to the wealth of natural mineral resources, including sand, salt, stone, peat and clay.

The Local Plan will set out how Cheshire East might be developed and improved over the coming years covering the period up until 2030.

The Local Plan has a role to ensure that adequate supplies of minerals are provided to meet future needs and that known mineral reserves are safeguarded from unnecessary development.

The consultation document considers and asks for comments on issues such as:

• Securing a steady and adequate supply of minerals


• Ensuring the prudent, efficient and sustainable use of mineral resources


• Safeguarding mineral resources


• Ensuring high quality restoration and aftercare of mineral sites; and


• Sustainable transport of minerals.

Cheshire East Councillor David Brown, Cabinet member with responsibility for performance and capacity, said: "Cheshire East is home to a wealth of natural resources and we want to make sure this continues for many generations to come.

"This area is famed for its sands, salt reserves and good-quality stone. Its extraction must be controlled and for this reason must be factored in to any discussions around the Local Plan."

The four-week consultation on the 'Minerals Issues Discussion Paper' starts on March 2nd.
