After much prompting and lobbying by the Parish Council, Cheshire East highways department are to go ahead with the final stages of consultation before making changes to the parking arrangements in Shropshire Street.

As shown on the plan opposite – click on the plan to enlarge it – the intention is to move the parking bays from the Methodist Chapel side of Shropshire Street to the Co-op shop side.

There are two main purposes behind this move

  • To provide some degree of protection to the pavement just outside the Co-op, where pedestrians (especially children and older people) are at risk from heavy goods vehicles.

  • To create a "chicane" along Shropshire Street, forcing bigger vehicles and HGVs in particular to proceed more slowly and with greater caution than they usually do at present.

Notices will soon appear along that part of Shropshire Street, inviting comment and objections from members of the public. It is thought that new one hour limit parking restrictions will apply Monday – Saturday from 8.00am – 6.00pm.

Note that the map still shows the old garage where the Co-op and Kingbur Place development are now located.

Pinch-points will also be created on the New Bridge on the Salford side of the village and the bridge over the canal at the Bridge Inn to give priority to vehicles leaving the village. The pavement over the canal will also be widened.

The long-awaited dropdown kerb in Stafford Street just below the Old Priest House (Beaman's) is also due to be installed, the Parish Council has been told.
