We were handing out the last goody bag by 7.15pm as the hesitant, the curious and the shamelessly exuberant, respectively shuffled, strolled and legged it through the gates at the
Baptist church last night.

The site was battered by strong gusts of wind in the late afternoon and we had our work cut out keeping the plywood for the graffiti wall upright and the crisps from scattering like so much confetti across the tarmac.

By the evening though it had subsided a little and, more importantly, had stayed dry so that jenga, pool and the 'wheel of ideas' (you had to be there) were all gainfully employed outside until 9pm.

All evening there was a clamour around the festival head dress making table, so much so, that an emergency supply of elastic had to be deployed to sustain the creatively industrious bunch. Likewise the graffiti wall drew a crowd, and a queue, while each took turns to dress 'Breaking Bad' style (blue gloves, surgical mask...that might be an inappropriate reference but you get the picture) to make their mark. The club now has its first self-created work of art thanks to the brilliance of artist Dominic Graham and the 38 potential founders of the new Audlem Youth Club.

Yes, 38 young people ventured forth last night to check it all out and eat an Oxtail and Trotter burger and, a slightly less wholesome, frankfurter from a jar. Thanks to them and their palpable enthusiasm, 100 metres of bunting, an old bike wheel, a 30 year old table tennis table and a contributing cast of thousands later – we feel we had a hit on our hands.

We have had lots of positive comments and words of support since last night and we are greatly looking forward to seeing all those new faces and more over the coming weeks as the club becomes established.

Humongous Thankyous

The success of an event like this can only be achieved by a stonking team effort and we have to say that Team Audlem Village came into its own again last night thanks to the kindness, generosity and all round good egg-ness of so many people.

Whether it was putting a poster in a window, offering a discount to young people, donating a gift, stumping up funds or being hands on blooming brilliant (Volunteers Denise & Mike, Dom, Tony, Alan & Judy, Carol, Gin, Deb, Jane, Kelly, Ann-Marie, Toby, Cecile, Simeon, Gary & John T ), we have so many people to thank. So thank them we will, in no particular order:-

  • The Co-Op
  • Oxtail and Trotter
  • Beamans
  • Williams Newsagents
  • Cheshire Organic Box and Juice Spa
  • Lllovely
  • JA's
  • Audlem Parish Council
  • Cheshire East
  • Audlem Baptist Church
  • Boots Chemist
  • The Lord Combermere
  • Wine Geek
  • The Post Office
  • Audlem Dry Cleaners
  • Audlem Cyclesport

Special mention to Denise (Co-Op) & Mike for slaving over a hot barbecue all night and to Dom for helping us to create a masterpiece.

Youth Club will be happening again next Wednesday 15th July, 7pm – 9pm, Baptist Church Meeting Room, £1 subs on entry. Hope to see you there! (...if you're 11-18 of course!)
