Householders in the rural parts of Crewe & Nantwich, including Audlem, are to be offered the chance to join the brown bin garden waste scheme run by the borough council. The council says since the scheme started in 2003, there have been increasing demands from residents in rural communities to join the scheme.

The council say the cost of the service is likely to be £22 for a year, or 45p per week. They point out that they would prefer people to home compost but recognise that many lead busy lives and may not be inclined to do so.

Richard Furber, the chairman of Audlem Parish Council, has welcomed the move: "I am very pleased to hear the scheme will now be available here," he said. "This news is most welcome for the people of Audlem."

For those who would prefer to continue to use home compost, the council says it has a limited number of composters available on a first come, first served basis free of charge by phoning 0800 387491.
