National Service Day is on Sunday June 28th 2015

Audlem will be represented at the Annual National Service Memorial and Re-union, to be held at the National Memorial Arboretum this Sunday, by Nora Bate, well known in the village. She has been especially invited by the Chairman of the National Service Foundation.

Nora was in the Women's Land Army of Cheshire from 1942 to 1946. Her last placement was in the Cheshire Street hostel in Audlem and she has been in the village ever since!

Nora is pictured here with the Mayor of Stafford.

Recently she was interviewed and filmed by Fiona Phillips of the Daily Mirror for a BBC documentary on the crucial role of women in WW2.

Three women are featured, one of whom lost her soldier husband and had the payments to herself and her daughter immediately reduced.

Nora recalls the land girls, 'No one realises what those girls went through. Lovely glamorous girls worked in heavy boots which made their ankles bleed'

You can read the full Article from the Daily Mirror of 7th May 2015 on their website or in the History Society Archive and this also contains reminiscences written by Nora previously.
