Starting at Chirk Castle, the route takes us along a short part of Offa s dyke, and then via quiet lanes and good tracks to the village of Pontfadog. From there we go uphill through forest and emerge to enjoy good views of Llangollen and surrounding area. A stony track downhill takes us back to Offa s dyke., where a steep grassy path takes us to the Crogen battle bridge, and then we return to our starting point via the grounds of Chirk Castle.
The walk is just over 8 miles long, with about 1500 feet of ascent overall. There are 3 stiles, one steep grassy descent, and one rough stony path downhill. There will be some sheep in places.
Meet at Audlem carpark for departure at 8.30 am. It should take about 50 mins to drive to Chirk Castle carpark, which is free. The castle doesn t open until 10am, but the toilets should be open when we arrive.
NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.
Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.
Non-members of Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
