The next Audlem Ramblers walk on Saturday 12th April will be Moel Famau led by Steve Elliott, leaving Audlem Car Park at 8 am.

Description:-

12km (7.5ml) Long504m (1573ft) Height gain

The walk is a 3 booter because of the fairly steep ascent and descent. 1 easy stile (dog friendly) and unless it rains, not muddy. Its mostly dog friendly with a couple of areas with sheep.

We will leave Audlem car park at 8.00am – its a 1hr 10min drive to the Loggerheads Country Park visitor centre ( 7 fee for all day parking), There are loos, cafe, ice cream and an information centre.Ruthin Road, Nr Mold. CH7 5LH – its well signposted.

After a short walk along a minor road, we then take a gentle track across farmland, possibly with sheep, before a short, fairly steep rise into the forest. For the next 1.5 miles, the forest track rises steadily through open forest, mostly with good views. As we start to see the summit, there is then a steep stony track for 0.3ml, which is part of the Offa s Dyke path.

Once at the summit of Moel Famau (3.5ml) you can take in the views and explore the interesting historic Jubilee Tower. Building of the monument for King George III started in 1810 was designed by Thomas Harrison in the Egyptian style, but it suffered lack of funding, erosion, and damage. In 1970 the ruins were repaired.

The descent initially starts down a steep stoney path before then becoming a nice grassy gentle descent through open hillside. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including grouse that nest in the heather. You may also notice the numerous patches cut into the surrounding vegetation that are part of the local habitat conservation efforts for both the flora and the fauna.

Sheep may be present in this area.

After passing Frith we briefly join a very quiet road and then descend a sandy path sharply down to the wooded River Alyn valley.

We arrive there to see Devil s Gorge with two solid limestone walls that are 30 metres (98 ft) high.

We finish the walk with 1 mile stroll on what is known as the Leete Path – water from upstream was channeled for mining activity. We pass 2 adits (a horizontal passage leading into a mine for the purposes of access or drainage.) The path gently meanders above the river before reaching the Visitor centre (and ice cream)!

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.

Non-members of Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
