New-look Lord Combermere opens today

It's the eagerly awaited re-opening of the Lord Combermere in the Square today. A £400,000 plus project has transformed the pub and, judging by the reactions at a preview last night, residents and visitors will be delighted by the new look.

Those who remember the rather gloomy wooden panelling will find a brighter, much roomier pub and restaurant with a repositioned, well lit and longer bar. As well as a comprehensive range of lagers there are two cask ales and a third is being planned by licensee Derek Astley. There is an excellent range of wines by the glass, mainly priced at £2.50 for 175 ml or £3.50 for 250ml. Wines by the bottle are very competitively priced from £9.50 up to £14.50 and for celebrations there's Tanners champagne at £25.

The choice on the lunch time menu (12pm to 2.30 Monday to Thursday and 12pm to 5pm on Friday and Saturday) looks superb with dishes from £4.25 to £9.95. Examples include homemade cottage pie at £5.95 and Fisherman's pie at £6.50. There will be more on www.audlem.org on the Sunday menu and evening meals shortly.

The furnishings and all the fixtures are of the highest quality and the whole atmosphere is very welcoming. Throughout the pub are historical notes on the life of Lord Combermere, or Stapleton Cotton as he was before becoming Viscount Combermere. He was a general in the British army and fought in the Napoleonic wars. He lived from 1773 to 1865 when he died at the ripe old age of 92. Judging by its quality, the new look Lord Combermere should easily outlive him. A warm welcome back to a wonderfully transformed Lord Combermere.
