Smokers at the Lord Combermere should soon be able to light up in greater comfort.

The village centre pub has been given the go-ahead to replace the current canvass umbrellas with a new slate roof.

The green light was given by Cheshire East planning officers under delegated powers.

In a heritage statement by Markden Homes the pub is described as 'Mock Tudor' and says the new canopy slate roof canopy will not involve the loss of any existing features.

"The canopy fits within the footprint of the existing building area that is over a raised area off the existing car park," it adds.

The statement continues: "The canopy is designed with robust features to match the car park entrance detail which itself will be brought out towards the car park as far as the existing rendered pillars."

The planning application also includes replacing the sash windows that overlook the Square. The new windows will be identical to the existing ones but will be double glazed to combat heat loss.

A design statement accompanying the application says: "The Lord Combermere is a local very busy pub and is an integral part of the local community also serving holiday makers from the barges that pass through on the canal. The pub serves food all day."

"The village holds several musical events each year often utilising the Lord Combermere car park, the canopy will be used for such events."

The planning officer's conclusion is: "The proposed development respects the surrounding area. It will not have an adverse impact upon neighbouring amenity and the scale and design of the proposal is appropriate to the purpose it will serve."
