MP meets Cedar Court team

Morris Care, met with Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski at Westminster to discuss the pioneering new caring philosophy, environment and services the renowned care organisation is developing for some of its homes in Shropshire and Cheshire.

With over 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK today, Timothy Morris, Chief Executive of Morris Care, who run Cedar Court in Audlem, explained how his professional team have been working closely with Stirling University, widely recognised as the leading authority on dementia research, to pioneer a new approach to how homes are designed.

The learnings shape how the interior design can provide visual and sensory aspects to not simply meet the needs of residents, but to go beyond that in terms of providing the most bespoke environment possible.

These include creating specialist areas such as memory rooms, living in suites of two to three people, through to details such as using non reflective glass and particular imagery in frames at specific heights to promote a sense of calm and security.

These features are coupled by an evolutionary approach to caring, led by Home Manager, Carolyn Farmer, who runs Cedar Court home in Audlem, where the residents are encouraged to decide their daily routines as they would in their own homes.

Timothy Morris commented: "We have only recently opened Cedar Court and already we are extremely encouraged by the number of residents who are settling into their new home. We will also be incorporating elements where appropriate into some of our other Homes in Shropshire."

Richard Pollock, Director of Architecture at Stirling University, who co-ordinated the dementia design school course undertaken by Interior Specialist for Morris Care, Amanda Morris, said: "Having visited Cedar Court myself, it is wonderful to see how the lectures taught at Stirling have been translated into reality. By following the principles taught, it has brought to life our ethos on best practice in dementia care" he added.

Daniel Kawczynski MP commented: "In Shropshire it is thought that over 7% of people over 65 have dementia and this figure is expected to increase. This is particularly important for my constituency as we have a higher proportion of older people than the national average.

He added: "Innovative, proven ways of how we can positively help and care for those living with dementia is vitally important and the work undertaken by this leading local company is not only interesting for our locality, but is helping shine the light on how we as a nation can care better for those who live with dementia."
