Mozart Requiem with Audlem Voices

St James' Church was packed with a very appreciative audience on a glorious Saturday evening for a performance of Mozart's famous Requiem, a piece of soaring sacred music he composed – but did not fully complete – not long before his own untimely death at the age of only 35.

Four talented soloists – Soprano Jane Johnson, Contralto Marjorie Seddon, Tenor Philip Cartwright, and Baritone Kevin Whitfield – joined Audlem Voices for the occasion, ably conducted by our Musical Director Jenny Collis-Smith and accompanied at the piano by Naomi Newman.

Our soloists gave moving renditions of the heartfelt pleas for mercy and forgiveness expressed in 'Tuba Mirum' (The trumpet casts its awful sound) and 'Recordare' (Remember, blessed Jesus), and lifted us all to the heights with their 'Benedictus' (Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord).

The choir too brought out the full drama of the Day of Judgement as expressed in Dies irae (Day of wrath), 'Rex tremendae' (King of awful majesty), 'Confutatis' (When the accused are confounded) and 'Lacrimosa' (Day of tears), and brought the Requiem to a resounding close with 'Lux aeterna' (Eternal light).

And what should meet us as we left through the great West Door? The most beautiful rosy sunset over Audlem... !

Reminder!

We will be singing in St James' Church again during the Audlem Music Festival, on Saturday 24 May 2025, at 5pm. A mixed prprogramme, and free to all!
