Yesterday we published details about this Saturdays' ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk at Aston-on-Clun.

Peter Kay has sent some additional information about the village which may be of interest to those planning to go on the walk. Peter says:

"A black poplar stands in the centre of Aston-on-Clun. Every year it is decorated with flags on Arbor Day, an ancient public holiday, which stay in position until the next festival the following year.

"The celebrations also commemorate the wedding of the local squire John Marston in 1786 -- his wedding day coincided with Arbor Day and bride Mary Carter was so impressed that the family gave funds to perpetuate the event."
