It was an especially atmospheric evening for the Carols in the Square last night with snow glistening on every branch of the illuminated tree and the roofs around the village centre.

Despite the -11°C temperature, large numbers enjoyed the festive spirit at the ADAS organised Carols in the Square with thirty minutes of community carols to the music of the United 2000 Coop Brass Band.

The Mayor of Cheshire East was in attendance and he, and the many hundreds of residents, were warmed by the singing and the very welcome hot soup supplied by Jo and Allan of the Lord Combermere.

Afterwards, there was mulled wine and mince pies at the Bridge Inn or, with a welcoming hot drink and minced pies, the concert in St James' church by the South Cheshire Youth Sinfonia.

Between the carols, compère Bill Consterdine drew cheers as he detailed the many successes enjoyed by the village in 2010. He also reminded all that the 5As Panto tickets were on sale and, after all the festivities, the Scouts and Guides will be collecting the old Christmas trees to raise funds (It's £2.50 and collected from your door or driveway on 8th January).

Santa, who distributed sweets to the children, made his final appearance in Audlem this year before flying off to the North Pole to prepare for his big night on Christmas Eve.

Our thanks to Phil Baker for the splendid photographs.
