Note – this ARS walk is on Sunday, ,July 14th

The next Long ARS is this Sunday 14th July (instead of the usual Saturday).

The Penamnen round from Dolwyddelan will be led by Will Williams.

Meet in Audlem Car Park at 8.00am where Steve Elliott will meet walkers. Will is travelling from Wales to the start point of the walk at Dolwyddelan train station – suggested donation £1 for the day. There are no public toilets, but there is a picnic area, recycling and Wifi, and Dolwyddelan has a Spar, and a Pub.

Will's description of the Walk

Estimated Distance: 15km Time frame: 4-5 hours Map: OL18
It is a 3-booter walk with 600m ascent.

This walk covers some historic ground in a less-walked part of Snowdonia. Great views can be obtained for comparatively little ascent. I also saw numerous wildlife including lizards, dragonflies and what seemed to be a remarkable number of butterflies. There was also lots of sheep with lambs, on most of the route so dogs must be under control.

The mid part of the walk was good enough underfoot on Tuesday, but if there is any rain this week it will be squishy in parts.

The route goes immediately up the easy track by pretty stream to bwlch y groes. A little steeper section involved in the route to the top of Y Ro Wen but good underfoot. From here the views of Moel siabod and the Snowdon range is spectacular in good conditions.

The next section has soft ground underfoot falling to pass a potential escape route for a B walk. At 8.2km there is a bridleway (Not recced) that goes more directly back to Dolwyddelan via Cwm Penamen, where there are some houses of historical significance.

Those staying on the A walk will then gradually rise to Moel Penamenen. From the edge of the summit ridge there is also potential for superb views.

The descent from Pen-y-benar to Bertheos and finally Dolwyddelan is charming, through grassland and woodland, mainly on good paths, some with ripe bilberries.

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.

Non-members of ARS are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.

Kind regards
