Local metal detecting offer

The news that metal detector enthusiasts in Buckinghamshire have uncovered what is thought to be one of biggest hoards of ancient coins ever found in Britain may arouse local interest too.

After more than 5,000 coins buried inside a lead bucket two feet under a field near Aylesbury were found, there may be increased interest in the offer by local metal detectors to visit local fields to raise funds for Mend our Mum.

An offer to sweep a field in Hankelow resulted from their offer.

Last month, the local metal detecting club contacted AudlemOnline offering their services to help the fundraising. They said:

Since 2006, the club has raised over £15,000 for well deserved causes. All that depends upon the full co-operation and friendliness of the landowners and the farming community.

The club only participates in metal detecting for interest, pleasure and fund raising. All their members carry NFU Liability insurance.

The Hampshire horde just found contains specimens dating back to the 11th Century – the late Anglo Saxon, early Norman period. The coins will now be examined by the British Museum.

Mr Coleman, from Southampton, was taking part in a dig in the Padbury area on 21st December when he found the 5,251 coins depicting the heads of kings Ethelred the Unready and Canute.
