Local government reorganisation in Cheshire confirmed

The proposed reorganisation of local government in Cheshire was confirmed yesterday following a vote in the House of Lords. There was a lengthy debate on the Cheshire Structural Changes Order, 2008 during which a number of amendments to the proposal to form two unitary authorities were put forward.

As a result of the vote, all seven existing councils in Cheshire – the County Council and the six district councils – will be replaced by two on 1st April 2009. Audlem will be part of Cheshire East, which will be formed by the amalgamation of the existing boroughs of Crewe and Nantwich, Congleton and Macclesfield.

Elections for the new council will take place on 1st May this year.
