At their April meeting, Burleydam W I were given a blow by blow account of the day to day life of a prison doctor. Fortunately for Dr Jane Rees, our speaker, the blows were more often verbal than physical.

She recounted how some prisoners who requested an appointment with the doctor would ask for specific prescriptions to obtain drugs for purposes other than medical!

Dr Rees told how she had decided, as a young girl of eight, that having seen how their family doctor had treated and made better a patient that she knew, she was going to be a G P when she grew up. This she accomplished, and later in her life she went into the prison service. Currently she is employed at H M P Stoke Heath near Market Drayton, but she has experience of many prisons in the Midlands and North West.

Dr Rees judged the competition for an old bible which was won by Margaret Hollins with the oldest family bible, second was Angela Lightfoot who brought the New Testament that her father was given as a soldier in WW2 and third was Liz Gentil .

Joint President Jean Cornes took the meeting and welcomed Diana, a new member. Arrangements were made for the visits to Theatre Seven to hear the Military Wives Choir on April 14th, Harthill Cookery School on June 27th, and a painting class with Jill Adlington.

Malbank Group Spring meeting is at Audlem on May 21st and our entry for the competition 'a kitchen utensil' was voted on with Pennies for Friendship going to ACWW.

Cakes for the Cheshire Show on June 18/19th were requested and reminders given about the W I Coffee Morning in the Civic Centre Whitchurch on May 24th.

May 4th is the next meeting when Mr Jim Goddard will take us through the making of Wills and the intricacies of Power of Attorney: the competition – an old legal document.
