Stalking Protection Bill takes a step closer to being law

On the 9th July I sat on the Bill committee to take the new stalking law to its next stage. This will introduce civil orders meaning the police can apply for an order to prevent someone from stalking and covers "stranger stalking". The penalty for breaching this order will be up to 12 months custody.

As so many cases of stalking are based online, or at least begin there, it is very important that this Bill covers the digital sphere as well as the physical one. This is why I questioned the Minister on the issue and sought her assurances that the Bill is comprehensive in its reach.

Home Education petition presented to Parliament

I presented a petition to Parliament on behalf of a group of my constituents regarding a Department of Education consultation. The consultation called for evidence on Home Education however they failed to consult the home education community themselves.

"The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to withdraw the draft guidance and the consultation, until it has put in place an accessible and workable complaints procedure and further has consulted with home educating parents, as it has with Local Authorities, what the contents should include."

It is very important that parents who home educate their children, for whatever reason, can give their views.

Action demanded over derelict building in Winsford

Last week Councillor Mike Baynham came to me to ask me to intervene with Cheshire West and Chester Council. Cllr Baynham has been trying to get the Council to take action on the long empty, and now falling apart, Liquid Lounge in Winsford.

Following my discussion with him I have written to the Council to call for the Council to use the powers available to them to force the sale, refurbishment or demolition of the dangerous and ugly sore on the town.

Awards for NHS Champions

The 70th Anniversary Parliamentary Awards are a way to recognise some of the many champions that work within our NHS. All types of people were nominated, such as volunteers, porters, doctors and nurses, chief executives, and local health teams.

The champions were judged by a panel including the leaders of Royal Colleges, the Unison trade union, and the Patients Association – collectively representing millions of health and care workers and patients.
