At the next HISTORY SOCIETY meeting on Thursday, May 16th (7.30 p.m. in the Scout and Guide Hall) John Whitehead will describe the recently-discovered treasure of the Staffordshire Hoard.

The metal detectorist Terry Herbert recorded that he had a few sleepless nights in July 2009 when he unearthed a unique cache of hundreds of intricately designed pieces of gold, silver and garnet – sword pommels, helmet fittings and decorated Christian crosses.

This Hoard from the mid Staffordshire countryside near the ancient Anglo Saxon royal centre of Tamworth has enlarged our knowledge of the warrior society and its artistic culture which shaped the England to emerge from the so-called Dark Ages.

Visitors and anyone interested in this little known period of history will be most welcome.
