There's one sure way to end a 2-month drought in England – spend months organising a Gala!

Despite the weather on Saturday morning and, in particular, the downpours on Saturday night, the two-day Gala at Highfields this weekend was hugely entertaining.

Fortunately, it was sunshine all the way for much of Sunday afternoon with a variety of entertainment on show. The vintage cars lined up outside the house were a picture, while dog agility, Morris dancing and Clog dancing were popular.

The event, in memory of the late Jack Baker of Highfields, was to raise money for Audlem scouts and guides, cubs, brownies and beavers. It is understood that new volunteers came forward which in itself, as organiser Rod Cottrell said: "Makes the whole event worthwhile."

A highlight was the 240-strong Gala dinner on Saturday Night. There was entertainment galore and the only effect of the rain bucketing down on the marquee was on anyone unfortunate enough to need a visit to the distant portaloos!

We are sure all involved are grateful for the huge effort put in by Rod and Christine Cottrell and their team of workers and supporters over the weekend.

Also thanks to the Baker family who saw their garden taken over for the weekend and seemed to enjoy it to the full.
