The ADAPTability event on Saturday will feature, amongst other attractions, the benefits of keeping hens.

Chestnut and Penny were a surprise present last Christmas after an earlier chance conversation about how nice it would be to have a supply of really fresh eggs. Their owners have been delighted as each hen has produced virtually every day since starting to lay.

The hens came courtesy of a company called Omlet based in Oxfordshire, although unfortunately not the Henlay-on-Thames of that county. Their brochure and 'owners' instruction book' do, however, contain equally appalling puns.

The two hens arrived by van accompanied by an experienced animal husbandry expert who introduced the owners to their new charges and gave detailed information on feed, care and how to clip wings. The full kit includes an Eglu in which the hens can feed, wander, roost and lay.

The two should lay 600 eggs a year between them and so far they are on target. It's meant a continuous supply of omelettes, meringues and home-made ice cream as well as eggsquisite gifts for friends and relatives.

Hen owners will be on hand at ADAPTability to answer questions and tell of their experience. The event will also feature local crafts, local food production and talks on energy production and much more.

ADAPTability is in the Methodist Hall this Saturday, 2nd October, from 10.00am – 3.00pm. Entrance is free.
