2018 sees an outstanding set of GCSE results at Brine Leas School

The percentage of students gaining a pass (which equates to level 4 or above in 5 or more subjects including English and maths) is 80%. Across the board 50 students (an amazing 24% of the Year group) averaged a level 7 or better in all their Attainment 8 subjects. In terms of targets, the school has met or exceeded virtually all internal measures. Overall the Attainment 8 figure is (provisionally) an excellent 55 points, up considerably from last year, with 31% achieving the English Baccalaureate.

Key results:
Attainment 8:    55 pts
20% of cohort gained Grade 7 or above in English and Maths
45% of the cohort gained Grade 7 or above in English
57% of the cohort gained Grade 5 or above in English and Maths
78% of the cohort gained Grade 5 or above in English
80% of the cohort gained Grade 4 or above in English and Maths
There were 136 Grade 9's – a lot higher than would be expected
30% of all GCSE grades are Grade 7 or above (including A*/A grade for Legacy subjects)
3 students gained straight grade 9's (90 Attainment 8 points)
50 students (24%) gained 70 or more Attainment 8 points (equivalent to straight A grades and better in old money!)

Andrew Cliffe, Headteacher, commented, 'We thought we had been successful twelve months ago; this year, in every measure, we have improved on, and beaten, our challenging targets. This set of results are excellent. Students can only try to meet their challenge targets, supported by great teaching and encouraging families. All students are different and their very best could be a set of grades at 9's and 8's or it may be results featuring level 4's and 3's. Most students achieved a positive value added which shows their hard work and commitment. I am delighted with the success of our students and for nearly all of them it will allow them to move smoothly to the next stage of their lives. '

Many students are enrolling onto courses at BL6 and there are still a few places left if anyone wishes to apply. Details are on the website (www.bl6.org.uk).

The move to the new levels 9 to 1 (from A* to G) does means that this year's results cannot be meaningfully compared to those of previous years. The majority of subjects have been graded using the new measures of 9 to 1. The new level 5 grade straddles part of a C to a B grade whilst the new grade 9 will only be awarded to 3% of the country. A grade 4 is defined as being a pass grade. To determine if the school has done well it can compare to internal targets that were set whilst it waits for the publication of Progress 8 data in the Autumn term which will compare student performance at BLS with schools across the country.
