On Saturday, Audlem Online reported that the Parish Plan team had attracted around £54,000 in recent months for village projects.

These include the planned closure of the towpath to the north in March to allow hard-coring of about 600m from Bridge 80 towards the village. Yesterday, we featured the new boat that is to be fitted out and will ply the canal from Audlem to the Overwater Marina and onwards to Hack Green and Nantwich.

A third project will be to install touch screen computers in the Mill Shop and Overwater Marina. These will promote Audlem and district attractions; describe the life and works of Thomas Telford and show much about the working of the canal, including the operation of locks.

The computers have now been acquired and the program content is being prepared. This will involve filming in the early Spring using local talent and computer design and programming.

Other projects include the printing of leaflets to attract visitors while the Parish Council is funding improvements to the path that leads from the playing field down to the Shroppie Fly car park. This is used heavily at events such as the Transport Festival but can be slippery and treacherous after rain.

The projects are all designed to attract trade for local businesses – eight new shops have opened in the past eighteen months – and were described in the Audlem Parish Plan which was distributed in December 2010.

Funding has been gained from Cheshire East council; the Northern Marches LEADER fund; Visit Chester & Cheshire; Audlem Parish Council; British Waterways and Overwater Marina while Rod Cottrell has bought the boat, featured in yesterday's news, that will be fitted out locally over the coming weeks.
