The Maughan family from Hankelow hope to diversify their farming business by
building a canal marina basin on the Shropshire Union Canal. Plans have
just been submitted for the proposed site which is close to Audlem and would
be accessed from Coole Lane.
The site is ideally situated as boat owners
will be able to walk along the towpath, which forms part of the Weaver Way,
and into the village, providing a welcome boost to local businesses.
British Waterways report that its network of canals is enjoying a vibrant
renaissance and demand for marina moorings within the area remains buoyant
despite the present economic climate.
Angus Maughan says: "The planned Overwater Marina will house around 200
boats in what we consider to be a delightful and tranquil lake land style
setting which will create a range of aquatic habitats. We are also going to
plant hedgerows and trees to provide shelter and create habitats for nesting
birds. It is important to us to work with the local community to create a
business which will provide rural employment and boost tourism income."
A small chandlery shop and boaters' café will also be developed along with a
marina office, toilet, shower and launderette facilities and a boat
workshop.
The "Overwater" name comes from the original name of Monks Hall
Farm, which, until the late 1800's was called "Over the Water Farm". When
Angus's father Richard started to breed pedigree Holstein Friesians on the
farm in the 1960's he named his herd the Overwater Herd.
The farm itself will remain an active dairy enterprise, which is also in
Natural England's Higher Level environmental stewardship scheme. As part of
this, the Maughan's undertake a range of on-farm conservation measures and
regularly welcome visitors to look around and learn more about farming and
the environment. If anyone would like to contact the Maughan's to discuss
the plans or to arrange a farm visit they are welcome to call on 01270
812748.
