The last meeting of the club's retired business and professional members (March 27) broke new ground by welcoming it's first-ever female member . . . while the next meeting takes off with a hair-raising presentation by a record-breaking daredevil.
The first woman to join Audlem Probus is Dr. Helen Marsden, a career scientist who worked in the industrial gases and chemicals industries. Helen will be known to many local people as Co-ordinator of the British Heart Foundation's "Heartstart" courses held in the village to train people in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and other life-saving techniques.
Helen's interest in joining Probus was first raised when she became aware of the variety of speaker topics presented each month. She was finally persuaded to visit as a guest when she saw that Dr. Diana Leitch was scheduled to talk about the history and science of chocolate. Helen doesn't disclose whether it was her love of chocolate, or her love of science, which won the day! Since that presentation, Helen has attended Probus's twice-monthly meetings and is now a paid-up member. She says: "It's so good to have the opportunity to hear about a variety of topics in a friendly setting. And joining some fellow members for lunch afterwards is a bonus".
Other retired professional and business women have been to Club meetings recently – still more are always welcome!
The next speaker, on April 10, is Roger Devonside, described as "Britain's longest-service wing-walker". Roger has raised thousands of pounds for charities being strapped to the wings of aircraft flying loop-the-loops and other stunts. He's reported as saying that his hair-raising hobby is "very scary, but very exciting".
Guests and new members welcome: Audlem Public Hall, from 10am, April 10.
