First Village of the North

When a member of the Northern Powerhouse committee stopped in Audlem on a journey to use the village's public toilets, he was impressed by the sign outside showing that Audlem was the most southerly village in the official North of England.

At his committee's next meeting, he suggested that this should be recognised with a giant work of art in sight of the A529 road as it enters the North at Swanbach and near to Coxbank.

While the transfer from Gateshead of Antony Gormley's gigantic Angel of the North was said to be out of the question, a public consultation on a new piece of work is soon to be announced.

AudlemOnline's webteam have met and, so far, have discussed a number of options:

First, a giant cock up on higher ground near Coxbank commemorating that hamlet's history of cock-fighting, hence its name, although it's unlikely the old sport's blood-stained reputation will find favour in today's politically correct climate.

Secondly, a whopping big statue of the North's favourite dog, the whippet, although as this is Cheshire that may just be a bit too Northern for local tastes.

Thirdly, a gigantic wedge of cheese commemorating the great northern cheeses such as Cheshire, Lancashire and Wensleydale. Against the idea is the virtual disappearance of first farmhouse Cheshire cheese and then dairy cows locally because of the predatory pricing activities of some supermarkets and milk processors. But then again, are there any Angels in Gateshead?

Have you a suggestion. If so, send it to editor@audlem.org and we will ensure the Northern Powerhouse receives your idea.
