AudlemOnline has received the following message from Australia: "Looking at your "Events" photos and saw two which appeared to be a memorial to many people who had passed away. Are these the names of any special group of people or something like a list of people whose graves are missing; headstones never erected etc.
"I am looking for my 2x great grandfather, John Herring – druggist died 1880s and his eldest daughter who died mid 1840s). John Herring would have been buried in the present cemetery.
"I looked for his grave when I visited Audlem in 2012 and couldn't find it; but where would his daughter have been buried? Both services were held at St. James' church.
"I have finally found the rest of his family – in my own backyard, so to speak. Son (William
Henry) is buried in New Zealand; son (John Edward and his wife; and mother are buried in Victoria; two more daughters migrated to Victoria and married there. Hope to have more details to send to you by the end of 2014."
In answer to the question about the two photos, we assume they are from the service dedicated to the Paupers' Memorial stone in June 2012. The stone's inscription says: 'Memorial to Unmarked Graves: Between The Years 1876 and 1951 Many Were Buried As Paupers, With The Fees Being Met By The Parish.
'These Graves Were Discovered In 2003 And The Ground Beneath Which They Lie Made Good. The Names Of These Forgotten Persons Are Inscribed Hereon – In Lasting Memory Of All Such Men, Women and Children. 2012 AD.'
If anyone has information on John Herring and his daughter, please let AudlemOnline know and we will pass it on to our correspondent from Australia.
