With the yellow signs already up on several roads warning of future potential traffic disruption in Audlem, a reminder of our earlier story about electricity works in and around the village may be timely.

Steve Allcock of Scottish Power briefed Audlem Parish Council at its meeting earlier this month about the extensive work involving the replacement of 120 poles and installing modern cabling in the area.

He indicated the following areas and dates for the work although all are subject to confirmation. Households affected by outages as power is switched off will be informed well before the date.

Work in the Chapel End area on the Woore Road was scheduled for 23rd January and then for 14th February – time to plan that candlelit Valentines supper – while the 29th January will see the focus on Kettle Lane and Paddock Lane. Access along Paddock Lane will be maintained.

Bagley Lane will be attended to on 19th February.

When necessary, there will be traffic lights on the Woore Road. There will be road closures, however, on the Woore Road when work moves nearer to the village on 21st February which will mean a 20-mile diversion for HGVs. Suggestions from councillors that this should be made permanent were, of course, only half serious!

The western side of Audlem will also be included in this major exercise with the slope up to Whitchurch Road to Copthorne programmed for 31st January and then a 2-day road closure where the road narrows from Moorsfield towards the Green Lane junction on 4/5th March. This will involve a 16-mile diversion although access for residents will be maintained.

Green Lane will see work on 31st January.

All these dates could vary and there will be a minimum 10-day advance notice of any outages to individual households. Companies such as Joseph Helers and Robert Wiseman which have many milk tankers passing through will be kept informed too.

Steve Allcock said there is a lot of work involved – but also a lot of men including tree cutters, pole erectors and others. He apologised because it will cause considerable inconvenience but is necessary to bring poles and cables up to date. Some high voltage cables will also be updated as they were installed many years ago.

For those with health issues where outages could cause particular problems, while some are already registered with Scottish Power, it might be sensible to alert the company by calling 0845 270 0788 or e-mailing customer.care@sppowersystems.com and the power company will hopefully be able to address any concerns you have.
