Dementia Awareness Week: Supporting Our Community Together

As we mark Dementia Awareness Week this May, it's important to reflect not only on the challenges posed by dementia, but also the hope and support that exists within our local community. Dementia is now the leading cause of death in the UK, affecting nearly one million people, with numbers expected to rise significantly over the coming years. It touches the lives of so many, whether directly or through loved ones, and it's vital that we raise awareness and continue to strengthen support networks.

Here in Audlem and the district of south Cheshire, ADCA (Audlem & District Community Action) is proud to play a central role in helping people live well with dementia. Through our dementia-inclusive services and community spirit, we aim to ensure that no one feels alone on their journey.

We run friendly and welcoming coffee and lunch clubs across Audlem, Hankelow, and Broomhall and Sound, all designed with inclusivity in mind. These clubs offer a relaxed space for people living with dementia to connect, engage, and enjoy activities such as quizzes and games, all while helping carers find a much-needed moment of support and rest.

In addition to our social clubs, ADCA hosts a dedicated Dementia Support Group every Thursday, which provides tailored help to both those living with dementia and their carers. This group has become a lifeline for many, offering everything from emotional support and peer-to-peer conversation to practical advice and advocacy.

Most recently, the group came together to celebrate VE Day with a joyful afternoon of strawberries and cream, traditional garden games like croquet, and uplifting Glen Miller-style music, a special event that brought smiles to faces and a sense of nostalgia and belonging to everyone there.

The success of our dementia support work would not be possible without the generous backing of our community. We are deeply grateful to Audlem Charity Shop, whose ongoing support over the last three years has made it possible to establish and sustain our dementia group. We're also thrilled to have received a recent donation from the Crewe and Nantwich Round Table, ensuring that our vital services can continue to grow and reach even more people. We must also extend thanks to Cheshire East Council and the National Lottery for their continued support.

At ADCA, we believe in the power of community, compassion, and connection. This Dementia Awareness Week, we celebrate the strength of those living with dementia, the dedication of their carers, and the ongoing commitment of everyone who helps make our work possible.
