OPENING OF CREWE GREEN LINK ROAD, CREWE BY SECRETARY OF STATE – December 21, 2015

Crewe Green Link Road (David Whitby Way) is a 1.1km dual carriageway running north-south between the Weston Gate roundabout on the A5020 Weston Road and the A500 Hough-Shavington bypass.

The road scheme will unlock a swathe of potential development sites as well as alleviating congestion, reducing traffic journey times and contributing to the continued economic growth of Crewe and the surrounding area.

Contractor Morgan Sindall was appointed in July 2013 to deliver the road scheme which also included the installation of a railway bridge to carry the Crewe to Derby rail line.

The scheme includes extensive environmental impact mitigation measures and the planting of hundreds of saplings, trees and shrubs.

The road completes the eastern bypass for Crewe and will be of huge benefit to local businesses.

Installation of the bridge was a major 54-hour operation carried out over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Cost: £26.5m
Delivered on time

Crewe Green Link Road is one of several major highways schemes delivered by Cheshire East Council supported by the Department for Transport, with key partners including Highways England and Network Rail.

Following Basford West Spine Road and the opening of Crewe Rail Exchange this is the third major scheme opened in Crewe recently and recognises the Council's huge commitment to its growth agenda for the town that can expect to see an enormous increase in terms of jobs and housing opportunities over the next 25 years.

Other projects recently completed to improve traffic flow and support economic development are Junctions 16 and 17 on the M6 motorway, which are major routes for Crewe and the rest of south Cheshire and north Staffordshire.

Other schemes in the pipeline or underway include; M6 Smart Motorway, A556 and A555 off line dual carriageways, Poynton Relief Road, Sydney Road Rail Bridge, Congleton Link Road, Crewe Green Roundabout, A500 corridor and Middlewich Eastern Bypass.
